Vivo d'Orcia is not a place, it is a way of life...
The castle, which has been in the Cervini family since 1534, lies in the Orcia Valley in southern Tuscany, 60 km south-east of Siena, near to Arezzo, Perugia, Orvieto and Assisi and in the immediate vicinity of such cultural jewels as Pienza, Montalcino and Montepulciano. |
The former caretakers house Casa del Fattore and the recently restored Casa di Pietro, both secluded farmhouses with shared pool, offer accomodation all year round. The property has an old world charm. |
The castle of Vivo dŽOrcia lies in the upper Orcia Valley, its location commands a spectacular view over the widespread valley below. The village of Vivo is at walking distance from castle and the houses for rent. Beautiful woods - which want to be discovered on signposted walks - surround the property. |
History First mentioned in the year 1002 the castle is built close to the source of the Vivo river which used to supply the city of Siena with water. In 1534 Cardinal Marcello Cervini, later Pope Marcello II, of whom the present owner Count Marcello Cervini is a direct descendant, transformed the castle and the gardens with the help of the famous architect Antonio di San Gallo.
