The old villa, which has recently been restored, was in an ideal position to control the commercial routes that ran from Pisa to Volterra and Siena thanks to its elevation. According to the first documents, which date back to 855 A.D., the parish church, property of diocese of Lucca, initially played a loading role because of its considerable wealth and the fact that it controlled fourteen suffrage churches. |
In 1300, the parish church slowly started to loose its importance due to the frequent communal wars that made attendance to this country church dangerous, forcing the population to prefer those of the neighbouring fortified castles. As a consequence, the parish church of Santa Maria a Suvigliana, as it was then kwon, ceased to be used for religious functions in 1466. Restored from the ruins of an ancient IX century church, it dominates the commercial route that in the Middle Ages linked up Pisa, Volterra and Siena and that today joins Ponsacco and Casciana Terme. |
The imposing restoration works included even the outdoor setting, through the reopening of rural paths and the enrichment of the green, making use of over 4,500 ornamental plants and forest trees, of course respecting the Tuscan tradition. For an exclusive ceremony, an unusual meeting, an important party, in Villa San Marco- Dimora Storica you will have the chance to feel the charm of a medieval hamlet, with its silence, its peace and the sense of freedom that only great spaces can give. |
