The Vicchiomaggio Castle can be traced back to the 5th century. The Castle was first called Viccio dei Longobardi, the village of the Longobards, in the Renaissance the name was changed to the present Vicchiomaggio (maggio-May).

The Castle occupies
a strategic position on the hill dominating the Greve valley and, in the middle ages, was the first defence for Florence during its feuds with Siena. The Castle can also be found in the archives of Leonardo da Vinci who was a guest during a period of residence in the area. The academic Francesco Redi, prepared his book "Bacco in Toscana" published in 1685 at Vicchiomaggio. In it he describes the virtues of wine and the benefits of moderate drinking.

The historic atmosphere of the Castle is totally retained and the building itself is maintained to the highest possible order.Secluded but not isolated, Vicchiomaggio is only 18 km from Florence and 4 km from the markettown of Greve in Chianti.

The garden of the Castle, of "Formal Italian" style, offers
unrivalled views across the surrounding hills and vineyards as well as spectacular sunrises and sunsets. The surrounding private estate invigorating walks and the possibility of observing viticulture and the cultivation of olives directly in the field.
