In 1700 Baron Herman De Schubart, minister of the Danish King, built the villa for the use as his own private residence. He called the villa "La Vedetta" (engl. Lookout) because of its enchanting panorama that one can admire from the huge terrace. The frame within the villa is situated, was the ideal place for those who love art like the Barone De Schubart did. Within a short time, the residence became a meeting point for many foreign artists, of mainly Danish origins, being on their trip to Rome.

After many years, the property became part of the Order of the poor children of "San Giuseppe Calasanzio", which because of the charity activities nowadays is still in the rememberance of the livornese people. Afterwards nuns transformed the villa from the children home of war prisoners into a male college.

Today, the villa is
completely restored, respecting the original Tuscan style and converted into a Hotel, becoming perfectly part of the striking views of the Etruscan Coast.

The 31 rooms of the "Hotel La Vedetta di Montenero" are all with bathroom, telephone, fridge-bar, colour tv, hairdryer and air condition.

There is even
a congress hall of 400 sqm, for 120 people, with natural lighting, equipped with the most modern technical equipment.

The hotel has a refined restaurant with the characteristical lighting of the original antique windows, a tea room where it is possible to taste a wide range of tea, originating from China and India. Furthermore there is a room for wine tastings, where it is possible to make tastings of precious wines, mainly from the Etruscan Coast. Those tastings make your stay in our hotel unforgettable.

From the terrace of 370 sqm, one can relax under the warm sun or read a good book under the fresh and shady trees in the park. From everywhere one can admire
during the day the cobalt blue sea, in the evening the spectacular sunset and furthermore the town of Livorno.

For artists, writers and poets, it is possible to open the access to the small tower, which dominates the villa There they will find the ideal place of silence and beauty, necessary to find the right inspiration to work.

The villa is surrounded by
a flourishing garden, where one can pass moments of total relaxation and peace. From here starts the route of the "Valle Benedetta" (Benedetta Valley), a trail which passes through the park of the livornese hills ("Parco delle Colline Livornesi") arriving until the "Colognole" aqueduct of the 18th century, then passing even through the center of "Castello" reaching the "Chioma"-stream. Passed the beautiful "Valle di Quarata" (Quarata Valley) one reaches the beautiful "Piazza del Santuario".

During the summer time the "Hotel La Vedetta" di Montenero offers the opportunity to take part at
numerous summer events: regattas from the "Molo Mediceo" (Medici Pier), horse races at the racetrack "Caprili", a visit at the sea aquarium or just a beautiful, never ending walk along the sea and the Naval Academy (over 10 km), a characteristic tour to the islands of the Tuscan archipelago (Island of Elba, Gorgona, Capraia, or even to Sardinia and Corsica).

In July even take place the so called
"Sagra del Pesce" (fish festival) or the famous "Effetto Venezia" (Venetian Effect) from the end of July until the beginning of August, where are offered a lot of attractions like theatre, visits to the Medici moats. This enormous festival of voices, lights, sounds and colours, is taking place within streets, court yards, on bridges, in historical "palazzos" and "piazzas" representing the very antique heart of the town, which is inspired particularly by the Mediterranean mentality.
