Wine Production: Vallebuia has produced Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG for as long as the records go back, and still uses the traditional mix of Sangiovese, Malvasia, Trebbiano and Canaiolo vines to achieve the unique combination of fruit and aromas that has made this historic red wine world famous. Small releases of both oak aged and un-oaked Chianti are made each year, the majority being drunk by guests staying at the house or bought to take home with them. Vallebuia is a member of the Association of Producers of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Italy's first DOC white wine. About 5,000 bottles are made each year on land rich in the chalky sand on which the Vernaccia vine thrives. |
At its best within two years of bottling, Vernaccia di San Gimignano is the only Tuscan white recommended by Robert Parker's "Wine Buyer's Guide". Vallebuia sells it's lightly-oaked Vernaccia to private buyers from all over Europe. However, the majority of wine production at Vallebuia is concentrated on "La Tosca", a super-Tuscan based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged in French and American oak. After extensive replanting in 1989 the first vintage released under the "La Tosca" label was 1996 and this has now sold out. The 1997 vintage (thought by many to be the best in Italy for fifty years) was bottled in March 1999 and has already been sold or reserved. |
The 1998 vintage has now come of age and is available for sale. Vallebuia is advised professionally both by the old established Chianti firm, Melini, and for a while by Alberto Antonini, whose personal stamp is to be found in selected vineyards in Italy, France, Chile and the Napa Valley. Under their guidance further plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have been made in 1998 and these new vines should be making a contribution to "La Tosca" in vintage 2003. Whether on the land or in the cantina we are costantly striving to improve our standards of wine making. All guests staying at Vallebuia are welcome to taste the wine and visit the cantina. Group wine tasting can be arranged privately. |
