PISA TUSCANY INTRODUCTION
|
| Standing
on a vast plain area between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apennine Mountains, on
the banks of the Arno river, Pisa boasts of ancient but uncertain origins.
Several archeological findings, such as the unexpected discovery of a lot of Roman
ships in 1998, demonstrate that Pisa was an important city at the sea, with a
strategic harbour, that became a leading and lively commercial centre in the Mediterranean
Sea.
It was in the 11th century that
Pisa turned into one the four famous and powerful Italian
Maritime Republics, together with Venice, Genoa, and Amalfi. |
| The
Leaning Tower is an
incredible building, considered one of the seven wonders of the world, and has
become a symbol and mark of identity of Italy itself.
The tower is just one of the entities composing the beautiful and perfect painting,
represented by the so called "Campo dei Miracoli"
(Field Of Miracles); a magic complex embracing beautiful historical and architectural
buildings such as the marvellous "Duomo", built from 1063, the interesting
"Camposanto", and the Baptistry; all examples of the so called Pisan-Romanesque
style. This
On
the contrary, you can admire beautiful examples of Gothic
style in many ancient churches in Pisa, such as Santa Caterina, San
Francesco, and Santa Maria della Spina. |

has always been an important cultural and scientific centre, known for its excellent
university, founded in 1343, and for the prestigious
"Scuola Normale Superiore", a school meant for talented graduated
students, located in the enchanting setting of the Knights'Square. Indeed, the
city of Pisa is associated with many notable and brilliant names, such as Galileo
Galilei, Enrico Fermi and Giosuè Carducci.
The
centre is rather small and can be easily visited walking or cycling; you can enjoy
shopping in the various types of stores. This extraordinary city, with the
main airport of Tuscany, can offer you a lot and is an excellent starting
point for exploring the surrounding towns of Lucca, Massa Carrara, Volterra, Siena
and Florence. | | Pisa
