Palazzo Squarcialupi, 3 Star Hotel, Chianti Classico, Tuscany

On the top floors it houses the Albergo Squarcialupi, while the lower floors have maintained their traditional farming character: in the stone-vaulted wine cellars, the Classic Chianti "La Castellina" is still produced today, obtained from the prestigious grape varieties which extend over the countryside nearby. The Inn, with fifteen large rooms, two Superiors and three communal rooms, is cast in medieval setting to which the very walls give silent testimony. Every room, provided with bathroom, telephone, air conditioning/heating, mini bar and satellite colour TV, affords maximum comfort for a peaceful and relaxing stay. In the bar of the Inn, the wine-tasting room or on the panoramic terrace, guests can sample the house wine while admiring the magnificent view of the Chianti hills.

Moreover, rooms offer a view either to the hills (better saying to a breathtaking valley) or to the historical center. We have only 17 rooms altogether: 9 standard rooms, 6 junior-suites and 2 Superiors. As for other facilities, we have a spacious living room, frescoed playing-room, breakfast-room, cellar with own production of Chianti Classico and free wine tasting.

Palazzo Squarcialupi Historical Profile:

Palazzo Squarcialupi is part of the history of Castellina in Chianti. It is situated in the historical town center, on a road running along the XV century City Wall.
It has medieval origins, and, from the 2nd half of the XV Century, thanks to the Florentine Squarcialupi family, it has been renewed to become a luxury Palace. At the moment it is the most important example of civil building in Castellina historical center. Political and military events that occurred during the period from 1400 until the second half of 1500 (when Florence captured Siena) have caused the Squarcialupi family to live in Castellina.

In fact, Castellina was a strategic place to defend the Florentine Republic borders from the Republic of Siena attacks. After the conquest of Siena the Palace property and its territories passed to the Ugolini family. They completed the Palace, building its front as it looks today: with family armorial bearings made of two panthers placed side by side.

What remains of the Squarcialupi family are only armorial bearings which have been placed in a room at the first floor of the Palace. The Ugolini family transformed the Palace into a luxury residence providing it with a wine cellar and a farm, which have been maintained by the present owners. They have patiently revitalized the farm and completely restored the Palace.
