Fattoria San Martino, Bed and Breakfast, Montepulciano, Tuscany

In the heart of Tuscany a Dutch-italian designer couple, Karin Lijftogt and Antonio Giorgini own and run an organic B&B, Fattoria San Martino. The farmhouse is located 800m outside of the medieval town Montepulciano, between Florence and Rome in the south-eastern part of Tuscany. We have in a simple and casual way created an inviting and spacious home for our family and particularly for their B&B guests, only using natural materials and own designs.

Who Are We?
After years of busy citylife in the fashion business, we decided to change quantity for quality. Starting of producing organic wine and olive oil in Chianti we continued studying homeopathic farming and biodynamic agriculture in Trieste, before settling down in this beautiful old farmhouse, San Martino in Montepulciano. We have with love and care completely restored this old farmhouse in bio-architechture. We live on the ground floor with our two sons, and the spacious rooms on the two top floors are used as guest rooms. Apart from running the B&B we take care of the land with olive trees, beehives, 6 horses, fruit trees and a huge herb garden, we design and create wooden furniture, lamp shades, cushions, jewellery and other objects for the home. "dreams are not made to put us to sleep but to awaken us".

History:
The original tower of the farmhouse dates back to 1200, and through the centuries additions in brick have been added to it. Every brick has been moved, new floors have been layed, bathrooms created, and with a lot of hard work and care Antonio and Karin have created this little oasis without loosing the original soul and feel of the house. Today the fattoria stands with lime walls made as they originally where done, wooden floors, beautiful old tiles all blended with a mix of wooden furniture, artwork and homemade creations.

Privacy:
Space and comfort in a harmonious environment San Martino has small terraces for every time of the day, and space enough for every couple to relax and peacefully enjoy the views as well as the garden full of lavender, roses and a newly planted herbgarden with old varieties of fruit trees.

The Design:
Karin is a true expert in reusing old things, giving them a completely new value and life. She never throws anything away and sees the possibilities where others see rubbish. Shapes, textures and colors are exposed in new ways and put together in different combinations. She piles up egg boxes and they become a sculpture, an odd stick found in the forrest as decoration, sews cushions out of old bags from the Dutch post office, uses old scraps of linen to make bedspreads or lampshades, sews buttons onto a bracelet- and this way she gives everything a new story using it in a different way "as long as you use your imagination and keep your eyes and heart open - everything is possible" she says. Karin was born with two very good eyes, lots of imagination and tons of energy to get it all done. In between making her own creations and taking care of guests she can be found working in the herbgarden, picking olives, chopping wood for the fireplace, baking bread or preparing unforgettable delicious vegetarian dinners for her guests. She also shares her ideas and creations with a group of children who come and do manual work at her "Atelier".
