Poggio di Sopra is distant only only 1 km from the historic medieval village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, 9km from Montalcino and 35km from Siena. The easiest way to reach Montalcino is to take the Cassia (S.S. 2) south from Siena, past Buonconvento, and then turn right. The road winds up the hill, and you can park directly under the Rocca that the Sienese withdrew to. |

From Florence
Autostrada del Sole (A1) up to the exit Firenze Certosa. Follow direction to Siena for about 65 km along the major road till the exit Siena Sud (fourth exit from north). Follow direction to Rome, Buonconvento, Monteroni, Montalcino: you will be on the main road called Cassia no2. follow direction to Rome. Continue crossing Monteroni d'Arbia, Ponte d'Arbia and Buonconvento; after about 2 km past Buonconvento you will find a cross-road on the right. Turn following direction to Montalcino.
From Rome
Autostrada del Sole (A1) up to the exit Chiusi-Chianciano Terme-Montepulciano. Follow direction to Chianciano Terme, Montepulciano, Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia and so on. Continue crossing Chianciano Terme and you will arrive at Montepulciano. Before entering into the town, you will arrive at a cross-road: turn left following direction Pienza. Cross Pienza and continue to San Quirico d'Orcia. Before the town you will find a cross-road: turn right to Siena. After about 2 km on the right you will find a sign to Montalcino. Turn right and drive to Montalcino.
AT MONTALCINO
Entering in Montalcino you arrive in a traffic circle with a monument (Sandro Chia), turn around the circle and take the road with the indication for Castelnuovo dell'Abate and Abbazia di Sant'Antimo. Drive along this road for about 9 km and you will arrive at Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on your right hand you will see also the abbey. On the left, just after the first few houses, you will find a small typical bar-restaurant called "Bassomondo". In front of this, on the left again, starts a white road with pebbles. Follow it for about 900 m and you will arrive at the hill top where, on your right, two white pillars, usually joined by a chain, mark the entrance to the property. Enter and drive along the road fenced by small (young) olives trees for about 500 m and you will arrive just in front of the house. |
