Profile |
For over two decades, Castello Romitorio has continued to produce exquisite Tuscan wines, grappas and olive oils in both traditional and avant-garde styles. After acquiring the 12th century estate in 1984, artist Sandro Chia spent several years restoring the medieval fortress and transforming its lands into vineyards. He promptly constructed a cellar on the castle's ground floor using the most advanced enological equipment available. |
Sandro recently completed the construction of a 3000 mē cellar and enlisted the expertise of one of the world's leading enologists, Carlo Ferrini, allowing Castello Romitorio to continue leading the way for premium Tuscan wines. Sandro sees the key to the quality and harmony of Castello Romitorio's wines in his irresistible impulse toward artistic perfection: "I make wine with the same passion with which I paint - it is devotion, a sacrifice that ultimately brings the greatest reward." |
Poggio di Sopra
We completed restoration of this beautiful stone farming complex in 1998, taking great care to maintain the rustic character of the original structure while providing complete modern comfort. Its rooms are furnished in the highest standard with original Tuscan antiques while its white-washed stone walls, terracotta floors and wood-beamed ceilings provide a traditional Tuscan atmosphere. The house is surrounded by 8,000 sq.m. of private grounds. Situated among vineyards and olive groves, it rests on a hilltop providing commanding and breathtaking views, which extend over the countryside below. To the west lies picturesque Saint Antimo; to the southeast Orcia River passes silently below the slopes of Mount Amiata; and Montalcino stands proudly to the north. |
The house offers a restful and quiet holiday location. A peaceful country road (which only serves a handful of residents) leads up to the property. There is a 3 x 9 m swimming pool that is carefully tended by our gardener. The spacious garden area and the gazebo are also well kept and elegantly furnished. The main farmhouse is divided into two comfortable apartments. An adjoining part of the Poggio complex offers a study, fully equipped with a computer, fax, telephone, and a living room with a fireplace and complete bathroom. There is also a covered loggia with a traditional well and a functioning wood burning oven for baking bread and pizza. The house features a paved courtyard in front of the swimming pool with covered areas and tables for eating outside. Parking is provided on the property, right by the house. Poggio di Sopra is situated only 1 km from the historic medieval village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate and 9 km from Montalcino, which offers shopping and tourist activities. |
