 The village of Castellina in Chianti lies entirely in the Chianti Classico region. And it is here that we encounter the hamlet of Ricavo, exactly half way between Florence and Siena. A territorial border bitterly fought over for centuries between the two warring cities.

Coming by car from North:
On the highway A1 Milano - Napoli exit at Firenze Certosa. At Firenze Certosa turn right and bend in the "Raccordo Firenze-Siena" (the FI-SI) to Siena. Exit at San Donato in Poggio. Turn LEFT, crossing the bridge over the free-way. You are now automatically on SP 101. Continue on SP 101 going strait ahead and following road signs for Castellina in Chianti. Between the towns of San Donato in Poggio and Castellina in Chianti on the state boarder between the provinces of Florence and Siena the Route SP 101 will change to Route SP 76/a. Continue on the SP 76/a. On route SP 76/a between 3.lll and 3.ll turn LEFT following brown road signs for RICAVO. The signs indicate a chapel and a cemetery. Attention however, the turn off comes immediately after a big curve and if you are driving to quickly you will pass and miss it. Drive down hill on the Castellina County white gravel road (strada bianca) for 1km (a little bit more than half a mile). At the bottom you will find a big sign for Tenuta di Ricavo at the hotel's entrance. Drive up to the front square where the reception is. Welcome!
Coming by car from South:
On the highway A1 Napoli - Milano exit at Val di Chiana, take the 326 from Sinalunga to Siena. At the junction around Siena follow directions for Tangenziale and Firenze (Florence). You will automatically be on the freeway from Siena to Florence, the Raccordo Siena - Firenze (SI - FI)
Coming by car from Siena:
From Siena take the "Raccordo Siena-Firenze" ,the so called SI-FI (blue road signs), direction Firenze / Florence. Exit at Monteriggioni. Turn right on to route SR 2. Pass the town of Castellina Scalo. At the end of town turn off to the right following signs for Castellina in Chianti. You are now on Route SP 51, which you follow driving uphill until you come to a "T" connecting to Route 222. Bend off to the left on 222. Follow the 222 until the roundabout which separates the directions: - town centre (right), - Radda (straight), -San Donato (middle left)- Poggibonsi (sharp left turn). Take the road in the middle left direction San Donato. After the ice cream parlour and the hair dresser the Route SR 76/a begins. Follow the SR 76/a out of town. On route SP 76/a between 3.II and 3.lII turn RIGHT following brown road signs for RICAVO. The signs indicate a chapel and a cemetery. Drive down hill on the Castellina County white gravel road (strada bianca) for 1km (a little bit more than half a mile). At the bottom you will find a big sign for Tenuta di Ricavo at the hotel's entrance. Drive up to the front square where the reception is. Welcome!
Coming by train:
The nearest train station is Castellina Scalo, from here you can take a bus (buses are not running on Sundays) and, as this is a very small station, taxis are not available. |
