Profile |
The Ponte Caliano district, where the Relais in placed, only 500 metres from the nearest village, Capolona, used to be known as "Campo Barbarese", as it was here where the Goths, Longobards and Franks, among other tribes of barbarians, prepared before walking into Rome. It was at the entrance of the Casentino valley where a "palazzo" welcomed tired warriors and offered them rest and food. |
This place right on the bank of the Arno River became a stately home in the 17th century and nowadays hosts the Relais Torre Santa Flora lodging, completely renovated in 1996 and equipped with free connection to internet, heating and air conditioning as any other modern accommodation. |
The Santa Flora tower was built during the Longobard period, as far back as the 8th century, as an strategic point where to keep an eye on the Casentino valley. Today it comprises 2 romantic junior suites and 2 family junior suites. A mill stands besides the fortress: it was created around the year 1100 A.D. by the Benedictine Monks, and is still functioning. |
