Monteggiori has always fascinated tourists and many have made the village their permanent residence. The village is easily visited on foot. From the parking lot situated at the base of the hill a winding little road leads around the houses to the main plaza in front of the church. This 3 minute walk gives you the chance to enjoy the panoramic view from the hill.

Monteggiori is close to the coast and the famous resort towns of Forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta and Viareggio which are full of elegant shops, renowned restaurants and bustling nightlife.

The area offers
golf, horse-back riding, trekking in the Apuane Alps and many other sports. Not to forget the 20 km long sand beach.

Some historical notes:

In ancient times a feudal castle was located on the hilltop where Monteggiori stands now. The structure is first cited in writings in the year 1224. Some of the old remains including parts of the wall that encircled the castle are still visible today. Castrucci Castracani the famous leader and Paolo Guinigi, a member of the noble family from Lucca chose to build their "palazzi" in Monteggiori. The charming Santo Stefano church was built well before the 13th century and was enlarged and restructured during the centuries until it achieved its present form. The bell tower was built at the beginning of the 19th century.
