Viareggio is situated on the coast 24 km from Lucca and takes it's name from a medieval tower along the Via Regia. Thanks to it's warm micro climate, even in the winter, it is a popular tourist destination all year round. It is well known for it's carnival in January and February and it's Art Nouveau style of architecture which can be seen in the buildings on the sea front. The best example is the Gran Caffè Margerita which was designed by Galieo Chini.

Papier-mâché craftsmen spend the eight months prior to Carnival making the wonderful topical floats that distinguish
the world famous Viareggio's Carnival. Thousands of people come to the Tuscan coastal town each year to watch the parades and take part in the fun. Go there on February 11-18-25-27 to see the Grand Parades.

You will not forget the excellent cuisine. There are several famous Viareggio fish dishes, as well the traditional Tuscan cuisine.
You may prefer a pizza prepared in the traditional way or a terrific "spaghetti allo Scoglio" (spaghetti with seafood). The coastal area around Viareggio isn't particularly suited for wine making. Wine is made a bit further north, around the Cinque Terre, but most wine you're likely to be served in a Viareggio restaurant comes from Montecarlo, near Lucca.

Pietrasanta (25 km North West of Lucca)
A busy little town, Pietrasanta is historically and artistically the chief town of inland Versilia.
Share a coffee with marble sculptors from all over the world and maybe even visit a marble workshop. The town has a pleasant historical centre, and the main piazza is often decorated with exhibitions of modern sculpture.

Camaiore (18 km North West of Lucca)
Lying in the foothills of the Apuan alps, Camaiore
may not be very attractive on its outskirts, but the long central main street makes for a very pleasant stroll. There are some interesting shops and restaurants and the town has some fine examples of Romanesque churches and architecture.

Torre del Lago Puccini
A short distance south of Viareggio and reached by the impressive Viale dei Tigli, Torre del Lago is a quiet seaside town known chiefly for being the home of Giacomo Puccini who for years owned and lived in a villa here. The Giacomo Puccini Festival is held every year in the summer, in July and August. Enjoy a performance of one of Puccini's Operas in an open air setting, at night, under the stars, and in front of the lake of Torre del Lago.

Carrara
Is situated 126 kilometres to the north west of Florence at the foot of the Apuan alps and only a 15 minutes drive away from Viareggio.
Carrara is known for it's beautiful white marble and a walk through the town allows you to enjoy many examples of how it has been used. The Duomo is probably the most outstanding building in Carrara, started in the 11th century, it took 300 years to complete and, therefore, contains different styles of architecture. Other notable buildings include the Teatro Politeama, Palazzo dei Malaspina and the Pinacoteca dell'Accademia di Belle Arti. For those who want to see how this marble is extracted a visit to the Colonnata (7km to the east) is worthwhile.
