Siena Sienese people have no doubt, their town is the most beautiful town of Tuscany, if not of the whole of Italy. Siena has stayed a just about untouched gothic town. The Renaissance, one of the major influences in Florence, barely touched Siena's urban development.
The Palio The Palio, a traditional horse race run on the "Campo", the main square, is the most exciting highlight of the year. At each street corner you will come upon small ceramic plates decorated with a crest, mostly the figure of an animal. They indicate to which "contrada" (district) the street belongs. The Palio's "contrade" are 17 and they correspond to the 17 quarters of the city. The Palio takes place on the 2nd July and 16th August in the Piazza del Campo, but rather than in the square, the race takes place in the people's heart.
Sightseeing in the immediate vicinity: Eremo di Lecceto: a hermitage with church which lies very close to Pantanino. Eremo di Sano Leonardo al Lago: another hermitage dating from the 12th century which dominates a valley and can be admired from outside. Pieve di Ponte allo Spino: a beautiful church of the 11th century lying on its own in the countryside which was restored recently.
Shopping Simple shopping in the village of Costafabbri at 2,5 km. You will find a large supermarket in Siena at a 10 minutes. |
