Monterchi It is a beautiful and typically Tuscan village, and is close to many other interesting places. Among these are Anghiari - a medieval village with a fantastic historical centre with old churches and museums open for tourists; Sansepolcro - birth town of the famous artist Piero della Francesca, offering visitors the opportunity to see famous works of art, and then go on to the lovely selection of shops. Monterchi is home to the famous painting 'Madonna del Parto', a renaissance work by Piero della Francesca. This is a picture of the pregnant Madonna and is an object of pilgrimage. Visitors are cleared from the museum when local pregnant women come to pray. Within easy reach of the A1 highway, Rome is only 2 hours south and Bologna only 2 hours north. By using the E45 dual carriageway, the airports of Forli, Ancona and Rimini are also all less than 2 hours away. There is a major train station in Arezzo, again making an easy connection south to Rome and Naples, and north to Florence, Bologna and Milan. |
