Its good position makes it easy to reach nearby historical and cultural towns.
Situated on a tuffaceous hill 605 meters high, Montepulciano has deep Etruscan origins and because of the many buildings of well-known Renaissance artists is also known as the
"Pearl of the Sixteenth Century".
Around its main square, Piazza Grande, there are beautiful buildings such as the City Hall, the Cathedral, started in 1594 from a design by Ippolito Scalza but left unfinished, and other palaces built by Vignola, Sangallo and Peruzzi.
The most impressive
church of Montepulciano is the Temple of San Biagio, below the town, toward Pienza.
Montepulciano, with its numerous folk shows, is one of the most important turistic and cultural centers. Among these shows we can remember the concerts of the "Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte" in July and August,
the "Bruscello" on the 15th August and the "Bravio delle Botti", a very particular competition among the contradas of the town in which empty barrels are rolled down the main street of the town on the top of this, in Piazza Grande.
Wine is the most known product of Montepulciano and it is very interesting to visit all the cellars under the town where it is possible to taste wine.
Near Montepulciano there is the
"Naturalistic Oasis of the Lake of Montepulciano" with a very rare vegetation and many species of birds which can nest in this beautiful wildlife reserve.
From Podere le Manzinaie you can reach, exploring Southern Tuscany and Umbria, ancient abbeys, churches and medieval hill towns such: Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona, Siena with his famous Palio, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi, Orvieto, Trasimeno Lake, Florence and Rome.
- "Pienza", which was the residence of Pope PIO II, is now adopted home of the famous "pecorino" cheese. Pienza lies in the middle of the Val d'Orcia, in the South of Tuscany. During the fifteen century, Pio II, who was born there, wanted to turn that fortified medieval village into a small city. The fabric of the city widened following a regular, urban plan, where the longitudinal street or Corso Rossellino, which linked up the two main gate (Porta al Ciglio and Porta al Prato), assumed a prevailing importance.
- "Monticchiello", is situated on a hill in the Orcia Valley, it hosts "Teatro Povero", the theatre festival every August and Christmas. The village is of Etruscan-Roman origin.
- "Montalcino", home of the famous "Brunello red wine", of honey and local biscuits call "ossi di morto".
- "Bagno Vignoni", medieval village, a spa town with a very particular town square, actually a huge "bath" of hot spring water that arrive at 52 °C.
- "Cortona" where it's possible to find many precious pieces of antiquarian art and beautiful local craftsmanship. The city subsequently became Umbrian, Etruscan and Roman, and then in 1200, it became a free Commune under Uguccio Casali. The medieval history of Cortona ended Duchy of Tuscany. There are more than 2000 years of history found in Cortona, which makes it on of the most unique and fascinating city in central Italy.
