Profile |
Our story begins in the legendary wine-making 'Chianti Classico' region, on an estate that reigns over 300 hectares of vineyard, olive grove and Tuscan forest, one that has evolved over 500 years of Italian history. |
At the heart of the Estate is Villa Mangiacane - a magnificent 15th Century villa bearing the unmistakable hand of Renaissance master, Michelangelo. Once the home of the powerful Machiavelli family and centuries later, the Mazzei family, it is a villa with a rare heritage. |
Within the villa, the restored original Renaissance frescoes, and paintings ranging from 15th Century antiques to South African contemporary tell a story of a legend that has moved with the times. Just as Renaissance sculptors believed that a masterpiece lay dormant in every stone, and that the artist simply awakens it - Villa Mangiacane itself has awakened to embrace a new era. |
Throughout the centuries it has been tradition for Italian nobility to be patrons to great artists. Villa Mangiacane stays true to this by sponsoring on-site artists from Zimbabwe and abroad, and numerous art exhibition openings. All profits go to deserving African charities. |
As you pace amongst the myriad of masterpieces in the 'Giardino delle scultura' with its backdrop of nature, your eye travels in time as it moves across a spectrum that includes Lithuanian Cubism and Zimbabwean Shona sculptures. |
