Prato
Prato is famous above all, for its production of woolen fabrics that, since the Middle Age, has had a strong influence on the economical and social development of the entire area, but beyond this aspect, the city can offer highly significant historical and artistic tourist attractions, along an itinerary that goes from the Middle Ages to the most advanced modernity. And it is a good point to begin excursions in the surroundings and in the near art cities.

A nice walk will lead you in the centre where we suggest you not to miss:

Cathedral of St. Stephen
Splendid example of Romanesque Gothic architecture for Prato that, despite the many transformations it has undergone in time, maintains its architectural unity above all in the sagacious use of the two colours of stone: light alberese and dark green marble (serpentine), typical materials of Prato architecture until the 15Th century. Emerging from the façade is the Pulpito by Donatello and Michelozzo, used for the exhibition of the Sacred Belt of the Madonna. On the right side the Romanesque Tower (12th century).

Cathedral Museum
It occupies a part of the Palazzo Vescovile and houses a paintings dating from the 13th to the 19th centuries, sacred art objects and vestments, Etruscan archaeological finds.

Church of St. Dominic (1821-1325)
A refined Gothic structure in alberese stone and brick. From its cloister (1480) we enter the Fresco Museum , with detached frescoes, synopia - the preparatory sketches - and graffiti from the 14-17th century and objects from the Dominican Convent.

Church of St. Francis (1821-1315)
With brick flanks and transept, has a handsome two-tone façade in the typical alberese and green marble of Prato, crowned by a Renaissance tympanum.

Emperor's Castle
The only example of Swbian architecture in northern and central Italy. It was built over a pre-existing structure by Riccardo Lentini on orders of Frederick II. Near the Castle , along Viale Piave, there is the Medieval Cassero, a sheltered passage for troops, once connected to the Castle itself.

Basilica of St. Mary of the Dungeons
Built by Giuliano da Sangallo (1485-92) on orders of Lorenzo il Magnifico, on the site of the former ancient prison. It a masterpiece of harmonius proportions, laid out in the form of a Greek cross, typically Renaissance style

Textile Museum
The only museum devoted entirely to the art and technology of textiles. The collection consists of over 6.000 samples of fabrics that go from the 5th century A.D. to the present.

Luigi Pecci Contemporary Art Centre
Built to plans drawn by Italo Gamberini, the centre is not only an exhibition space, but a seat of international research and artistic production, housing an efficient Information and Visual Arts Documentation Centre. Moreover there is a permanent collection and, on the outside, works of famous artists.

Metastasio Theatre
Inaugurated in 1830 has an elegant hall with stalls by Luigi de Cambray Digny.

Politeama Theatre
One of the biggest theatres in all Tuscany, with 1.200 seats, began its activity in 1925 with "Tosca".
