By Car Coming from the North (Milano, Bologna, etc): Take the A1 highway (Autostrada del Sole) and exit at "Firenze Certosa". Turn right onto the "Siena-Firenze" freeway. After about 18 kms exit at "San Donato". Turn left and follow signs to "Gaiole in Chianti" and "Greve". Do not enter the village of "San Donato" but follow road until the road is narrow and you reach on your left a small church with a portico. Turn left immediately after the church following sign for "Gaiole in Chianti", "Greve" and "Sicelle".
Follow the road downhill through "La Piazza" (a good restaurant is on the road: "Osteria Alla Piazza", closed on monday) and at the bottom of the hill turn left following sign to "Greve". At the T-Junction after few turns uphill turn right at sign to "Radda in Chianti". Drive through "Lucarelli" and after about 7-8 kilometers look out for signpost to "Volpaia" and turn left. As soon as you enter Volpaia's square (with the wine shop in front of you), turn sharp right along stone wall and take a narrow road out of the village in the direction of "Panzano". After 2 kms on an unpaved road in the wood you will see a sign for "La Locanda". Turn on the left and drive downhill for 1 km. Welcome!!
Coming from the South (Roma): Take the A1 (Autostrada del Sole) towards Florence. Exit at "Valdarno" and turn right to "Montevarchi". On entering "Montevarchi" follow signs to "Gaiole in Chianti" and/or "Radda in Chianti". After about 15 minutes uphill, you find a cross and turn right at signpost for "Radda in Chianti" (a small detour to "Badia a Coltibuono", 1 km from the same cross is advised. Wonderful place with a medieval church in the wood... there is also a very nice restuarant/bar). Drive through "La Villa" and past a filling station. Instead of turning right towards "Radda in Chianti" keep on the left following signs to "Greve" and "Firenze". After about 3 kms turn right at signpost to "Volpaia". Welcome !! |
