We were very pleasantly surprised when our request to have the bill split between the four of us so we could pay separately was happily obliged. ... A pleasant stay. Would recommend Hotel Moderno to friends. Four of us stayed and we were all very happy with the standard of accomodation.

I think it's very worthy. The location is convenient. The room was clean and the staff was friendly. You could hear the bell ring of the church, but it didn't bother us. The breakfast was also good. It's realy a good place to stay.

I was welcomed and treated like a queen. When my taxi pulled up my suitcase was out of the trunk before I could get my money out to pay the driver. ... The hotel staff was excellent and extremely helpful with info on the city and excursions. Dinner was great and breakfast was wonderful with a nice variety. Room was great especially the a/c and towels.

The lady at the desk did not speak any English, but there were people at other times that did speak English. I expected English speaking because the web site said English was spoken. I did not consider this a problem or inconvience. ... I had read good and bad things about the hotel, but I thought it was very nice. The location was just great, breakfast was better that I had expected. Even though we were on the street side, it was not too loud. I was impressed by the hotel bath linens. We would definately stay there again. ... The hotel was in an excellent location, near the escalator (just across the street). Avis rent-a-car was very close. It fit our needs perfectly.

Each shift's desk clerk was knowledgeable and very helpful about Siena in general and getting around, bus schedules, and services. It was the week of the Palio and it was insane in Siena so they were very helpful in giving us 'inside' information about getting around, catching cabs, etc. Their advice and opinions saved us a lot of hassle and problems. ... The room was actually fairly spacious, in comparison to other rooms we'd stayed in. It was clean and well cared for. Having air conditioning is always a plus. Having the bar/coffee station downstairs was especially helpful. Also having their own restaurant saved us lots of time when we needed a quick bite before setting off somewhere. ... Desk staff was very helpful. Their English was very good. Their advice saved us lots of time and problems. ... Clean, typically Italian but the bathroom was comparable to an American-sized bathroom. Rooms were spacious. Staff well organized and very helpful. Breakfast had many choices with fresh food. Good location just outside the city walls with far less noise than if we had stayed closer to the Campo.

Great location close to the city centre however not located within it. Minutes to the escalator that will take you into the centre. Very friendly and proffessional service.

The published directions actually worked better than I had expected; and the road signs to the hotel were helpful - better than in other locations in Tuscany.
Staff at reception were friendly and welcoming. ... The room was as spacious as could be expected for a triple. It was, perhaps, a little dark during the day, and the lighting during the evenining could be improved. ... The convenience of the escalator to San Francesco is mentioned on the web site; but the significance is not obvious until you arrive! It would be useful to make a bigger feature of this facility. ... A comfortable, friendly hotel located at the entrance to Siena's old town, easily accessible for visitors arriving by car and a perfect starting-point for your visit to Siena.

Very good. ... The hotel did look diferent in reality than in the net pictures. The rooms were very clean and comfortable although a bit noisy(trafic noise) We were bitten by the mosquitoes of which there were lots. ... No problems. ... Clean, reasonably priced and convient to the city centre.

pretty much OK ... poor breakfast ... we could not enjoy the view from the restaurant into the garden for the weather conditions (the picture. The roadside view is not very pleasent. The near escalator is very helpful to get quickly into the city center. Please add better description how to drive to the hotel and put attention to the oneway streets. ... a fair place for a short stay

We all loved this hotel and will recommend it to all our friends. ... It is not in the City proper, which could make new arrivals nervous. But the escalator to the City is only a few steps away and was extremely convenient. ... Lovely, high quality, clean, friendly, professional. The breakfast contained much more than we expected! Don't miss seeing the Church of San Francesco. It's right near this hotel and the site of a Eucharistic miracle.

Even though this hotel is located right outside the walls of Siena, it is very accessible to the center and all of the attractions this wonderful city has to offer. The staff was very helpful and professional and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

The first room we were in was rather disappointing: not charming at all, rather austere in its decor. The next day we were permitted to move across the hall into a lovely room with matching spread, cloth headboard and chair cover and antique wood furniture. All rooms are not created equal at the Moderno, although their location, across the street from the escalators that take you right up and into 'old' Siena, is absolutely perfect. Visiting the Moderno was like visiting at our great-aunt and uncle's apartment in Brooklyn: worn old-world elegance, very welcoming and comfortable. ... This hotel is the best travel value that I know. ... With a room facing the valley you have shade, and country sounds. Rooms fairly spacious and good quality. City gate and escalator next door or practically so. Nice garden, very good breakfast and dinner on half-board option is very good value. These comments repeat similar experiences of five and thirty years ago. Consistent performer. ... Very nice, great value, relaxing, and 'next door' to city activity if you want it. Good meals available. Very highly recommended.

We found the hotel without any problems and were pleasantly surprised by the friendly staff and nice rooms. ... The garden is on the side of the building, not in front of it as the images on the web site might lead you to believe. ... The hotel is conveniently situated in Siena and has comfortable rooms and a nice garden. We were very happy with our stay there.

Some disappointment with breakfast each day. When the hotel had a tour staying the breakfast was much better than for the 'everyday guests' We had to request for fruit on the other days as tinned fruit was available on tour days, all we got was some fresh fruit & not given gracefully!!! Also on tour days the general variation of what was available not as good.A kettle in the room would have been good, overall we enjoyed our stay & would return. ... Generally the staff were helpful especially when we needed to send an urgent fax home to Australia. The situation of the hotel is ideal, so quiet but close to the escalator up to the city. We loved Siena, a beautiful city, thank you ... No issues, we were able to check out the night before & this always helps. ... Maybe when booking if a public holiday occurs during the dates you are booking it would be nice to be informed of this when making the booking. ... Yes.Comfortable, convenient to the city itself, staff generally helpful, comfortable rooms. Loved the view from our window!!!

They were ready for us and all went smoothly. ... The linens were especially nice for a budget property.
The location was excellent. It was easy to drive to and very convenient to the city center. ... The staff went above and beyond the call of duty to help us move to a sister hotel in the countryside.
... While well maintained the property could use some freshening for example our plumbing did not shut off properly and our window did not close completely.
These are not complaints as we felt the property an excellent value, perfect for our needs and if we return to Sienna we would use them again.
I mention these items because the pictures on the web site look better than the property. ... It is a very good place to stay particularly with a car.

The elevator (lift) is adjacent to the check-in desk; so, although it was small, it was very easy to access with our luggage. ... Although the room was smaller than expected (pictures on a website tend to make the rooms look more spacious); overall the accommodation was adequate, ie., the bed was comfortable, the air conditioning worked, there was plenty of hot water and the continental breakfast (included in price) was very good. The hotel was within 50 yards of an escalator used to enter the walled city of Siena. This was a bonus for tired travelers! ... The staff was very accommodating about allowing us to store our bags at the hotel after checkout to allow us more time to visit Siena before leaving on a late afternoon train to Florence. ... The hotel is only a quarter mile away from the Avis Car Rental outlet in Siena and only approximately three quarters of a mile from the train station. ... Great location just outside the walls of Siena, right next to an escalator which carries you up into the city. The rooms are small (typically European) but adequate and the staff is friendly and very helpful. It was a pretty good value for the price, especially considering we were there the weekend of Il Palio. Rooms were hard to find that weekend.

Easy access to the ecalator which takes you to the Campo. Very convenient which I didn't realize. I think that should be noted in your information. ... Tho hotel is on a busy street which I didn't realize from the images on line. We had a room in the back so it was quiet and not problem.
The matresses were not the best, very hard and lumpy. I would recommend them to be replaced.

The web-site stated that the hotel had air conditioning. Our room never really cooled off and it was most uncomfortable to sleep. We were very disappointed in that aspect of the hotel and would not return to the hotel for this reason.

The walls are very think and you can hear the people in the room next door snore at night. It is on a very busy road with a lot of noise. ... Yes, it is situated on a very busy road and that rooms are not soundproof. ... It is very convenient to see Siena because it is closeby but it is extrememly noisy and the wall are not soundproof so you can actually follow a conversation from the people next door.

The property needs to be updated. ... I needed a hotel with parking within walking distance of the city gates. I didn't expect a lot for 60 euros and pretty much got what I anticipated, good location but the hotel is worn down. Okay for one night but susquent nights would have been an issue. ... Good location if you require parking and are only staying for one night to quickly tour Siena. Don't expect much.

The lady receptionist who was there when we arrived was very glum and not communicative but all the others we dealt with were fine. This same person was not too interested when we mentioned there were a lot of noisy young italians on our floor who kept us awake talking loudly on the corridor late at night going out and coming in a lot later in the morning, we had this for 3 nights. ... Apart from the noise, the traffic is a problem too , quite noisy even during the night. ... because of the noise!. ... Noise! ... Good but noisy, you will be fed-up with this! Don' think you will publish this!

6. Staff were polite, but not especially friendly. 7.a. IMPORTANT: Air conditioning unit was not very effective. 7.b. Standard of breakfast was disappointing - I have special dietary needs and these were not catered for. 7.c. It was often difficult to get service at the bar. 8. The room was adequate but not attractive.
... Important positive fact - the hotel is very close to an escalator, which takes one close to the town centre. ... Cheap and adequate - nothing special, but well situated close to the town centre.

The location and accessibility to Siena is superb--we were travelling with my 79 year old mother and access to the 5 flights of escalators up to old Siena was amazing.
The front desk staff was very helpful, with travel arrangements, restaurant recommendations, etc.
The internet point in the lobby is not free but still very convenient and less expensive than most cafes. ... A real bargain--and plenty charming. The lobby looks like it was lifted directly out of the 1920s.

RE: Quality of Rooms: The room was very good. However we could hear the shower and conversation in rooms next door, as well as noise from above (i.e. not very quiet).
RE: What expected: 2 of us were surprised it was outside the walls of Siena, 1 of us wasn't (so I guess 2 of us missed something on the website). Thank God for the escalator up to the Church: otherwise we would have not been happy with the location at all. The escalator made it pretty good.
Breakfast: Was pretty good. There were a lot of 'sweets.' Would have loved boiled eggs or some form of protein other than the meat (which was very fatty for our standards). Glad they had yoghurt. Breakfast staff was very friendly and helpful. ... #13. Good to fair value. For us the dollar to Euro exchange rate made everything very expensive. Obviously, that is not the fault of the property. ... Not sure... Hotel very nice, but I would prefer a location inside the city walls.

We were generally ok with our stay. The pictures on the web site make the hotel look better than it actually is. The morning buffet is very limited and repetitive in what it offers. Fresh fruit would have been appreciated. Desk staff could have been more helpful around providing information to questions regarding simple things like the weather. ... There was some confusion about our bill, which was resolved fairly quickly. ... It was a perfectly fine place to stay in Siena. The proximity to the escalators made getting around the city very easy. Good value for money.

Our receptionist upon arrival was extremely good. Very pleasnt, organised and made us feel very welcome indeed. Unfortunately that was the last time we sa him and the rest of the staff were a long long way short of him. ... The hotel was very basic in all respects. The rooms were pleasant enough but very small while the building itself and the hallways in particular had a real run down dormitory feel about them - far from beautiful. ... Staff were only OK. ... Rooms are small. Restaurant service is off hand and slow while the surrounds of the restaurant are far from accomodating, big, run down and far too bright for a romantic dinner for two. ... Great location but don't ever stay there.

The hotel was outdated. We were without any water one morning which was very frustrating. The receptionist was polite about it but not particularly helpful ... I think the hotel is more of an overnight stay rather than a week like we did. By the end of the week the choice of breakfast had become rather boring and predictable.
