Versilia renowned name is not only deserved for its beautiful sandy beaches , in the shade of the Apuan Alps . It has been the homeland and meeting point of great artists since the beginnings of 1900. In those days, world-known artists, such as Lorenzo Viani and Galileo Chini, have made Versilia famous. It was the Liberty period, which has still left its strong mark in the lounges and palaces in Viareggio. Pietrasanta: The historical centre of Pietrasanta, with its smart Cathedral Square, is one of the most charming centres in the area. The marble facade and the brick bell-tower of St. Martin's Cathedral (built in 1526-1528) stand out particularly well. The Museo dei Bozzetti (Museum of Machetes) is located in an old convent, in one of the corners of the square. It contains models and moulds of sculptures, mainly in chalk, realised by the numerous artists who have worked or are currently working in the marble workshops and foundries in Versilia. The Pretorio Palace and the Moroni's Palace, the latter as the seat of the small but interesting Archaeological Museum, are only a few metres away from the Museum of Machetes. The imposing Rocca di Sala dominates the town. Moreover in Valdicastello, in the proximity of Pietrasanta, the house where the poet Giosuč Carducci was born in 1835 is well worth a visit. Pietrasanta, as a centre for the working of marble and the art of sculpting, has been since immemorial time the meeting place of artists and sculptors, from the Age of Michelangelo to Henry Moore and Mirň. Among the artists who have worked here are: Igor Mitoraj and Fernando Botero who donated some of their works to the town. The town is full of marble workshops and foundries, with a particular emphasis on the realisation of contemporary works of art. A tour of Pietrasanta wouldn't be complete without a visit to one of these places where so many famous work of art have been created. Also in those days, Pietrasanta became the destination for sculptors who found there not only well-equipped workshops where they could accomplish their works in marble, but also the most skilled art foundry. Camaiore: In the nearby Camaiore, rich in memories and monuments, every year the "Tappeti di segatura" (Sawdust Rugs) festival takes place. From there, the road to Lucca , which crosses tiny villages and, along which numerous antique villas capture visitors' attention, starts. Torre del Lago: In Torre del Lago, homeland of Giacomo Puccini, in the suggestive theatre by the Massaciuccoli Lake, the artist's operas are staged & performed. From Marina di Massa to Viareggio , passing through Forte dei Marmi , Marina di Pietrasanta and Lido di Camaiore, all the coast offers, to its affectionate regular goers, the best ingredients for a holiday, which ideally combines: social, artistic and literary life.
