San Casciano is at the highest point in the hills separating Val di Pesa from Val di Greve along the Cassian Way. Owned by Florentine bishops since its inception, San Casciano became a part of the Florentine Republic in the thirteenth century and was then fortified to become a castle and outpost to defend against threats coming from the Siena countryside.

Its main monuments include:
. Museo di Arte Sacra (Museum of Religious Art) within the church of S. Maria del Gesł;
. The Collegiata (collegiate church) and the Chiesa della Misericordia (church of S. Maria al Prato);
. The parish church of S. Cecilia a Decimo just outside the city center;
. The Roman church of S. Giovanni in Sugana along the road to Cerbaia;
. The parish church of S. Stefano a Campoli (which dates back to the year 903) located near Mercatale Val di Pesa;
. Villa Bossi-Pucci, also known as "L'Albergaccio", where Machiavelli lived while in exile.
