Profile |
The ancient Guinigi Estate of Matraia was founded in the 16th century by Tommaso Guinigi heir to a dinasty of merchants who had endowed the city of Lucca with significant landmarks, such as the Guinigi tower which is crowned by oak-trees, and the marvellous effigy of Ilaria del Carretto by the celebrated renaissance sculptor Jacopo della Quercia. |
Although close to Lucca, the hills of Matraia - a name of roman origin - have through the centuries retained an unspoilt rural character. The production of wine and olive oil has always been, and still is, the main activity of the estate, now renamed Fattoria Colle Verde, and still takes place in the ancient cellars, now fitted with the latest equipment for the making of wine and olive oil of the highest quality. |
The 17th century farmhouse and farm buildings have been recently renovated and furnished in typical Tuscan style to provide five properties for a comfortable stay in a beautiful rural setting.
Each apartment is self-contained with its own entrance, independent heating system and well fitted kitchen. Apart from the two swimming pools there is a pay phone and a coin operated washing machine, and a small "taverna" where, upon request, typical Tuscan dishes can be sampled. Shopping centre 4 kms away. |
The particular climatic conditions of Tuscany, the nearness of the golden beaches of the Versilian coastline, and the easy driving distance of the artistic treasures of Florence, Pisa, Volterra and Siena, makes the Fattoria Colle Verde the ideal place for a pleasant holiday at all times of the year.
