There are numerous different places that you can go to visit, from the mountains to the sea, with a bike, by foot, or by car.
Above the small village of Tiglio you will find Tiglio alto, an old medieval castle, where on its riuned foundations of its walls and tower, now stands the the church of San Giusto. In old times tiglio represented an important bastion, watching over from the top of the mountain. Meanwhile later in 1300 with Barga joining forces with I Medici, Tiglio became a fortress in command of the whole area and because of it's strategic importance it became the second most populated village in the area.
Folowing the CAI paths, you can by foot reach the neighbouring mountain villages,one being Coreglia antelmineli, ull o history and known for it's museum of plaster figures, the Tuscan Appenine crest, named "La Nuda", because it has no vegetation: and the Lago Santo (Holy Lake), near Modena.
The important medieval town of Barga itself must not be forgotten about, under Florence's liberal protection and influence, beautiful and important historical palaces were to appear.
More important, especially from an architectural point of view, is the Duomo di Barga (Barga's Cathedral). Building of the Duomo commenced in the X° century and completed in the XVII° century. On the road leading to Tiglio you will be able to admire the beautiful views of the Duomo and the Apuan Alps. You must not gorget to visit the Convent of Saint Elisabeth, and Saint Francis's., unique in it's examples of it's religious symbols made from Robbiane clay, (School of Andrea fromRobbia); the theatre XVII° century (Teatro dei Differenti), Pancrazzi's Palace and many more luxurious palaces and villas. It must be remembered that Barga has been recognissed as one of the100 most beautiful villages in Italy, and has been awarded La Bandiera Arancione (the Orange Flag).
Four kms from Barga, you can find the small village of Castelvecchio Pascoli, the home and place of death of the poet Giovanni Pascoli: remembering also his most famous poems like "L'Aquilone", "O Valentino", "La Cavallina Storna", "L'Ora di Barga", etc.
There is easy access to the whole of the Garfagnana area from Castelnuovo. G up until the Apuan natural reserve of Orecchiella, either by car or even on a mountain bike.
"L'Orrido di Botri" is a very particular place to visit, it is a small natural canyon, excavated from the a rock in the Torrente Fegana, only a few kms from Tiglio, le "ripide dell'Ania", (Ania's falls), reachable on foot, and the "Grotta del Vento", (the Wind Grotto).
The "Ponte del Diavolo", (the Devil's Bridge) otherwise called "Ponte della Maddalena", (Maddalena's bridge), goes back to the X° century, it's architectural shape and it's daring light will astound you as it crosses over the Serchio river.
Either by train or by car, you might want to go and visit the famous art cities, like Lucca, Pisa or Firenze.
Finally the sea, Viareggio is renowned for it's beautiful beach, and becomes alive with its yearly carneval festival, and it's night life, ongoing since the 1960's.
During the winter season you can go skiing on the most famous ski slopes in the Centre of Italy: The Abetone, approximately 1 hour and 15 mins by car, and The Radici approximately 1 hour by car.
