Grotti is a small village southwest of Siena on the hills between the Arbia and Merse valleys, near Ville di Corsano. Not far of from the village stands the imposing Castello di Grotti. Its two medieval towers were part of the defense system of the Republic of Siena. |

By Car: From the south (Rome airport - via coastal route, 2.5 hours drive) - exit airport follow signs to Roma - take exit to Civitavecchia, approximately 5 km from airport (there will be 2 tolls of aprox. 2 euro each) - follow this highway (the A 12), bypassing Civitavecchia, till Grosseto (180 Km) which you will also bypass as you follow signs for Siena. - after Grosseto, the highway becomes a two lane. At km 54.6 from Grosseto turn right on a dirt road and follow the signs to Grotti - after about 1km, take the right fork to Grotti - after 0.3 km, take the left fork to Ville di Corsano or Grotti - the dirt road crosses a wooded area for about 4 km going straight uphill crossing the village of Grotti ending on a paved road where you turn left toward Ville di Corsano - before Ville di Corsano turn left on a dirt road that angles off the paved road at the sign for Castello di Grotti - follow the castle wall around to the left, and turn left through the wall after about 400 mts - the large building ahead on the left is the Castle: welcome!
From the north (Milan/Florence/Siena) - take the Autostrada (A1) south towards Bologna-Roma, getting a ticket at the toll booth by pushing the red button if one doesn't come out automatically. - continue on the A1 to the Firenze/Certosa exit. Take it. You will pay your toll here. - you will immediately be at a large roundabout; take the first right off (it is signed for Siena and Grosseto); this will put you on the superstrada to Siena; it will take about 50 minutes to get to Siena - take the 4th exit for Siena named "Siena Sud" and turn right at the end of the exit. There is no sign for the right turn - go straight uphill. For less than a kilometer, this is a very narrow, winding road but with little traffic. - at the top of the hill there is a T-junction. Turn left for Ville di Corsano and Casciano di Murlo - in about 1.1 km, take the left fork to Ville di Corsano and Casciano di Murlo - in about 8 km you will pass through the village of Ville di Corsano (note: there is a grocery store on the left) - just after leaving Ville di Corsano (a half kilometer from the grocery), turn right on a dirt road that angles off the paved road at the sign for Castello di Grotti - follow the castle wall around to the left, and turn left through the wall in about 400 mts - the large building ahead on the left is the Castle: welcome!
