| | | This house, with its massive stone walls, is situated in the north-eastern area of Montalcino, ancient city in the heart of Val d'Orcia (Orcia valley) also known as "Crete Senesi" (Sienese clays). From here it's possible to have one of the best views of Val d'Orcia: San Quirico d'Orcia, Pienza and, during the clearest mornings, Montepulciano. |
This abode is part of one of the most important buildings of Montalcino's history, which used to be the city's mill. The mill's warehouse was where we now live and where the rooms are. Then it became a bricks factory, dominated by a tall chimney, of which only the basement is visible today. |
This building was in the ideal position for becoming a factory, thanks to the fact that it is near to the ancient source of the city (Fonte Buia ), of which a part is still visible today. The source and the mill themselves supplied Montalcino with the first electric energy source of Italy, in the end of the nineteenth century, thanks to the great talent of a Montalcino citizen. |
From the garden it is possible to see the main tower of Montalcino, in the Piazza del Popolo, built between the thirteenth and the fourteenth century, which recalls the stile of the "Torre del Mangia" of Siena. We are definitely in the heart of the city, and at the same time immersed in the pure tuscan country. |
Here we decided to restructure the building to make it our abode and the B&B Porta Castellana. Living a special holiday in the enchanted land where one of the most prestigious treasures of the world rises: Brunello di Montalcino. |
