Hotel Villa Casagrande, 3 Star Hotel, Florence Area, Tuscany

Villa Casagrande, formerly a residence of artistic heritage frequented by kings, queens and popes, has been recently restored and is now a luxurious hotel. Figline Valdarno is a medieval Village of the 12th century located in the middle of the triangle made up of Siena, Arezzo and Florence. This position allows visitors to reach easily these beautiful cities of art in a short time or, if they prefer to venture out into the splendid, luxuriant Tuscan countryside to discover its hidden wonders.

Nowadays as in the past, you would find Villa Casamaggiore of the Serristori Family, well-known as Casagrande. This building, half palace and half villa, was constructed in 1392 by Ser Ristoro notary of the Signoria of Florence. The Casagrande quickly became a meeting place for artists, and philosophers especially at the beginning of the Renaissance when members of the Serristori family and other noble aristocrats attended lectures given by the famous humanist, member of the platonic academy, Marsilio Ficino, who was born in Figline.

The Villa has also played host to great personalities like Pope Leon X (son of "Lorenzo the Magnificent"), King Charles VII of Bourbon, King Charles V of Spain and more recently Prince Umberto of Savoy and his wife princess Maria Josè who stayed there on their honeymoon. The interior of the villa is an artistic gem. The hall of the 14th century and the splendid first floor rooms are adorned with art treasures, paintings, frescoes, sculptures, furniture and coats of arms of great value.

Besides the splendid Reinassance style building, guests can admire a marvellous Italian garden which is spread out like a soft carpet, and intersected by pathways that trace geometric patterns on the ground, bordered by box edges. An ancient building found within the castle walls has been converted and is now home to the swimming pool, the modern sauna and the gym. The ancient kitchen, where the Countess used to spend her days, is where the guests of the hotel meet to have their breakfast and to enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

The restaurant, situated in the old weaponry room, in the winter and in the shade of the courtyard in the warm summer months, has a well-researched typical Tuscan menu, to be complemented by one of the excellent Chianti wines produced by the farm. In the large rooms of the Villa it is possible to hold meetings, gatherings, shows and conferences. Some of the outbuildings of the Villa have been converted into a farm. These housed the stores, the cellar and the wine vats of the original Villa. Some of the adjoining buildings used to house a spinning mill and a glass factory, which was opened in 1730.
