Cetine: Is situated in the hills around Siena, in an area with a big natural, historical and mineralogical importance. The stibnite mine, abandoned for over 50 years, it's still famous for the peculiar minerals found only here. In the medieval village of Chiusdino, there is a little museum about the history of the mine and Siena university is preparing guided tours. The area is has many paths and tracks that you can discover by mountain bike, horse or simply going for a walk. You will see castles, old villages and pure nature. You can also find a swimming pool 2 km from the house. In the Rivers Merse (10 km) and Farma (35 km) you can bathe in clear water. At 35 km from Cetine, direction Grosseto, there are the Petriolo hot springs (up to 40°C water temperature), situated close to a river. Access is free. At only 10 km, there is San Galgano (1288) a beautiful gothic building, without a roof. In summer the place is also used for performances. Near S.Galgano, on top of a hill, you can visit the Eremo di Monte Siepi (1185), a romanic church where the sword of San Galgano is kept protrudes from a rock, in memory of the Galgano di Guidotto spiritual conversion. |
Siena (20 km), is has a wealth of cultural and artistic attractions; for example the museum of the "Palazzo Comunale", the "Pinacoteca nazionale", the modern art centre of "Palazzo delle Papesse" and the Cathedral (Duomo). In summer, there are many events that make the city even more interesting: the International School of Jazz Music organises public concerts, and the famous Palio, a historical horse race between the "contrade" or quarters of Siena held in Piazza del Campo on July 2nd and August 16th. It's a special event, for the setting, costumes and contrada's waving of flags, ... you can feel the cheerful atmosphere during the horserace to win the palio and, finally, take part to the celebrations and parties after the race. The medieval villages of Monteriggioni (20 km), San Gimignano and Volterra (40 and 65 km), are famous for their architectural beauty and art. The Crete Senesi landscape in the Comune of Asciano is absolutely magic and unlike any other place on earth. |
