Profile

A strategic point in medieval times and (later) for the Florentine nobles, thanks to its geographic position it continues to be so for tourists visiting Tuscany. Certaldo is the home of Giovanni Boccaccio, one of the fathers of the Italian language. Here he has lived and died on 12 December 1375 and here he wrote the famous "Decameron".

The walls of the splendid village guard the remains of this novelist and his house, which has been turned into a rich library, well as the imposing "Palazzo Pretorio", built in the XII century and the residence of Earis Alberti, which was enlarged and modified later in order to accommodate the functions of Vicariate. The facade of which is embellished with beautiful coats of arms made of "serena" stone and glazed terracotta from the workshop of the Della Robbia family.

Very interesting the Church of SS. Jacopo e Filippo with the sanctuary of Benozzo Gozzoli and the grave of Boccaccio and beside the Sacred Art Museum. Certaldo Alto is a town of cultural and historical interest. The origin of this town most certainly dates back to the Etruscan period, as witness a few recoveries at Poggio del Boccaccio (Boccaccio Hill, an ancient tomb), even if its actual devolopment started in the early Middle Ages.
