 Certaldo, in the heart of Tuscany, in the gentle landscape of Elsa Valley, marked by vineyards, olive trees and cypress rows, is one of the most inspiring sites in the country: a rare example of a still untouched medieval boroug tipically rising on a rocky uplift.
Certaldo is known worldwide especially as the home town of Giovanni Boccaccio, who lived and died there on 12 December 1375 in his house at Via Boccaccio. It is a town of cultural and historical interest. The origin of this town most certainly dates back to the Etruscan period, as witness a few recoveries at Poggio del Boccaccio (Boccaccio Hill, an ancient tomb), even if its actual devolopment started in the early Middle Ages. |
 The most rapresentative monument of Certaldo Alto is Pretorio Palace, built in the XII century and the residence of Earis Alberti, which was enlarged and modified later in order to accommodate the functions of Vicariate. The facade , the entrance-hall and the courtyard of the Pretorio Palace have got the signs of all the Vicars and the beatiful armorial bearings of glazet earthenware mode by Della Robbia's "bottega". Very interesting the Church of SS. Jacopo e Filippo with the sanctuary of Benozzo Gozzoli and the grave of Boccaccio and beside the Sacred Art Museum.
The naturalistic estate of municipal land owns zones of geological, vegetable and faunistic interest. The "Dolce Campagna, Antiche Mura" programme proposes four routes for trekking, mountain bike and horse connected by a big ring (about 130 km).
In Certaldo you can enjoy of recreational and sport activities: riding, swimming pool, tennis, trekking, Golf (10 km). Especially in the summer period, there are many cultural, musical and artistic events. In July the spectacular festival called "Mercantia" with its street artists and artisans on every corner of Medieval town
In general: In Certaldo Alto there are two restaurants, one pizzeria, two bar, a grocery store, handicraft, souvenirs and wines stores. In the modern town center (walking distance or by funicular) you will find supermarkets, banks, bar, restaurants, Pharmacy, Food shops. Market day: Wednesday. |
