In general : Within 20 km from Borgoiano are some of the most important historical and artistic sites of Tuscany which maintain,, in their old town centres and in their museums, works of art of great value. The charming landscape of the area alternates rolling hills cultivated with olives groves and vineyards to more savage places in which the grey of the clay gullies mix up with the yellow of the ripe wheat.
San Vivaldo (3 km from Borgoiano) is famous for the Sacred Mount , or Jerusalem of Tuscany. It is situated in the middle of a wide wood named Selva di Camporena , it is a group of chapels and small temples decorated with terracotta statues and high relief from the workshop of Della Robbia representing with skilful realism, scenes from the Passion of Christ.
San Gimignano is known as the "town of the beautiful towers". Its unmistakable skyline has silhouetted for centuries in the surrounding country which still produces its old and famous wine: the "Vernaccia". Here it seems that time has stopped at the medieval age as its beautiful squares and streets maintain untouched the charm of the past. Among the many monuments the Cappella di Santa Fina, the Museo Civico, the Museo di Arte Sacra, the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino with the Cappella di San Bartolo are not to be missed.
Volterra lies on a precipitous hill with open views in every direction across a splendid yellow and grey landscape of clay gullies and hills. The town, of Etruscan origin, maintained its importance with the Romans as testified by the Arco Etrusco, the precious collection of Etruscan cinerary urns of Museo Guarnacci and the Teatro Romano. Volterra has also beautiful medieval buildings and the XIII century medieval Duomo. The town has for long been famous for the traditional skill of its craftsmen in working alabaster, hundreds of workshops still produce works of art with the stone. The old town of Certaldo stands on a hill overlooking the Valle dell'Elsa. The "borgo" maintains its medieval character. All the main brick buildings and houses with towers of XIII AND XIV century face onto the main street, among them the Boccaccio's house. At the end of the street is the Palazzo Pretorio with its façade decorated with pictoresque coats of arms in stone and glazed terracotta. The old walled town centre of Castelfiorentino lies on a rocky spur.Of great artistic interest are the frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli which decorated two tabernacles on the Via Francigena, now housed in the Biblioteca Comunale. Worth visiting is also the XII century romanesque church of Sant'Ippolito. At the entrance of the Lower town is the church of Santa Verdiana, a wonderful example of baroque Tuscan art with the splendid mannerist frescoes of the interior.
San Miniato is situated on the ridge of a steep hill dominating the Valle dell'Arno. The two distinguishing towers are the remains of the Rocca, an imposing castle built by Federico II in the XIII sec. The old town centre mantains beautiful buildings like the Palazzo del Seminario the façade of which is decorated with graffiti, the Duomo, the Museo Diocesano and the wonderful oratory of the Madonna di Loreto with delightful XIV century frescoes. Last but not the least, a plunge into the world of the local handicraft, at the discovery of terracotta, pottery, leather, and alabaster goods, glass and jewelry. A kaleidoscopic variety of suggestions peeping out from the luxury shopwindows of Ponte Vecchio in Florence but also from the street markets which every day fill up with their colors and scents the narrow streets and the squares of all the villages. |
