One of the highest and most handsome hill towns in Tuscany, Montepulciano has a rich collection of fine builidings and churches designed by some of the most distinguised architects of the Renaissance; Vignola, Sangallo, Peruzzi.
In a quiet location, near the west walls of the town, Palazzo Benincasa has a distinguised past, it was owned by the family of St. Catherine of Siena and then by Giangastone de' Medici whose imposing bust is above the entrance and then became the residence of Maltas' knights ( as the Cross painted in one of the fireplace testifies) . |
Through the wooden doors, a gracious stone staircase leads up to the top floor entrance to "La Mansarda". The sitting room with open fireplace is decorated and furnished in most welcoming, attractive and comfortable contemporary style with ochre colour washed walls and distinctive black and white kitchen area with travertine marble tops (pictured overleaf). Guests can place chairs or cushions by the large picture windows to enjoy the lovely panorama, overlooking the square and church of San Francesco. There are also extensive views over the terracotta rooftops and towers to Lake Trasimeno. |
The bedroom with blue colour washed walls (pictured above) has a stunning view out over the jewel in the crown of Montepulciano, the church of San Biagio (on inside! right strip of our green folder) widely considered one of the most important churches of the High Renaissance and Pienza. Sunlovers can take a chair down to the quiet square of San Francesco with lovely views out over the surrounding cypress studded countryside. |
Apartment Nobile is on the top floor of Palazzo Benincasa and is comfortable and very suggestive flat is composed by a dining room and a TV room equipped with fireplace and a fully equipped kitchen. There are a double bedroom and a twin bedroom both equipped with bathroom with bathtub. Each bedroom can accommodate a maximum of 4 guests. In this apartment there is also a studio, the ideal place where guests can relax reading or listening to music. Near the studio there is a third bathroom with shower. At guests' disposal there is a laundry equipped with washing machine and dryer. |
A highly recommended holiday base for those who love fine wines and food, art, architecture and the arts and an unusual bolt hole to tuck yourself away over the millennium period. The famous ruby red Vino Nobile wine of Montepulciano can be bought at a shop in the Palazzo and there are numerous 'cantine' or cellars all over town where it can be sampled and bought. Steps away from the Palazzo is Piazza Grande, the main square with fine cathedral. From the tower of the Palazzo Comunale there are magnificent views over the Val di Chiana, to Pienza and Monticchiello to Monte Amiata and on a clear day the towers of Siena. A1l elegant boutiques, restaurants, bars are within very easy walking distance of the Palazzo. |
