Profile

Located in a 15th century palace that was the site of one Pope's secretariat in the very centre of magic Pienza, less than 100 metres from the central square
with its magnificent cathedral and the splendid Palazzo Piccolomini,
L'Antica Locanda offers unique and gracious accommodation for discerning visitors. Newly renovated and offering a refined and relaxing atmosphere, L'Antica Locanda has been equipped with modern facilities while fully respecting its antique structure and charm.

The rooms, with original beamed ceilings, are spacious and decorated with antique Tuscan furnishings. Some of the accommodation have breathtaking views of the Val d'Orcia, the splendid valley unfolding below Pienza, while others overlook the charming historic centre of Pienza. It was in this Tuscan town that Renaissance town-planning concepts were first put into practice after Pope Pius II decided, in 1459, to transform the look of his birthplace.

He chose the architect Bernardo Rossellino, who applied the principles of his mentor, Leon Battista Alberti. This new vision of urban space was realized in the superb square known as Piazza Pio II and the buildings around it: the Piccolomini Palace, the Borgia Palace and the cathedral with its pure Renaissance exterior and an interior in the late Gothic style of south German churches.
