Antica Fonte Resort is located close to Casole d'Elsa and Colle di Val d'Elsa, where you can find all sorts of facilities such as supermarkets, banks, post offices, pharmacies, churches etc. As the residence is situated in the countryside we suggest you to rent a car in order to move easily in the area. Below you find information about some of the nearby places of interest. Casole d'Elsa - enchanting medieval village, used to be a key part of Siena's western defenses. The village is very quiet and well-maintained, and you can taste fine Tuscan food and wine. Here you can find banks, grocery stores and a post office. You can reach the village walking uphill the ancient path above the Residence, by foot it is only about a ten minute walk. Colle di val d'Elsa - the village is divided in two: Colle Bassa and Colle Alta. Without any doubt, the most beautiful part is Colle Alta, the old medieval centre perched upon a ridge. From Piazza Arnolfo (the main square, in Colle Bassa) it is about a 10-minute climb up along Via San Sebastiano (now you can also use the recently constructed elevator that in a minute takes you from Colle Bassa up to Colle Alta.) Halfway along the road you will reach Piazza del Duomo, dominated by the cathedral. Next to the cathedral you will find three small museums; Museo Civico and Museo d'Arte Sacra are in Via del Castello, Museo Archeologico is in the square. From Colle val d'Elsa you can easily reach Florence, Siena and Volterra by bus. The buses leave from Piazza Arnolfo, and you can buy the tickets at the bus station at the corner of the square. San Gimignano - dominating this small medieval town are definitely its 14 towers (they used to be 72!), that once symbolized the power and wealth of the city's richer families. Entering the main gate, Porta San Giovanni, you walk up Via San Giovanni with its many souvenir and ceramic stores, until you reach Piazza della Cisterna and the connecting Piazza del Duomo, and you will find yourself right in the city centre. Walking down the other side of Piazza del Duomo you find Via San Matteo and the other main gate, Porta San Matteo. A short climb uphill west of Piazza del Duomo you reach La Rocca with its amazing panoramic view of the surrounding Tuscan countryside. This ruin used to be the town's fortress. Siena - this beautiful town is without any doubt one of Italy's most enchanting cities. Its medieval centre bristles with majestic Gothic buildings, such as the Palazzo Pubblico on the main square, Piazza del Campo, but also its many churches, museums and public buildings. The old centre of Siena, still for the major part surrounded by its medieval walls, is small and easily tackled on foot. The streets swirl in semicircles around the city's heart, Piazza del Campo. In this wonderful shell-shaped square locals as well as tourists gather for a relaxing break in one of its many bars and cafés. The square is known all around the world for the Palio, the spectacular horse race that takes place in honor of the Virgin Mary twice a year, on the 2nd of July and then again on the 16th of August. The race dates back to the Middle Ages and features, apart from the race itself, much eating, drinking and celebrating in the streets of the city centre. The cathedral is one of Italy's great Gothic churches, and dates back to 1196. The church is dominated by black and white marble. The Pinacoteca Nazionale is just a short walk from the cathedral, and is a gallery which holds the greatest concentration of Tuscan art in the city. |
