The surroundings of Agrilago are also very interesting for their natural beauty and history.
Val di Lima: This piece of land, still untouched and distinguished by its venerable chestnut woods, yields hornbeam chestnuts from which the excellent neccio flour was milled at the farm named after the adjacent Lake. Many wild animals are to be seen in their natural habitat in these woods, where the influence of man has been marginal. The Val di Lima is naturally favourable to sporting activities. There are many beautiful tracks for hikers and mountain bikers of all levels. The peaks of the Apennines are perfect for paragliding. Rafters are drawn to the Lima for the force of its waters, while the Val di Lima is home to several maneges.
Nearby you can visit:
. The wildlife sanctuary of L'orrido di Botri and l'oasi del Balzo Nero. . The ancient medieval bridge called "Ponte del Diavolo" that crosses the Serchio river. . The Orecchiella Park with its ancient cuisine and traditions.
There is also horse riding nearby.
Bagni di Lucca: Thermal baths with natural thermal hot water and the Spas that offer you all kinds of beauty treatments from thermal mud, Jacuzzi, and massage.
Skiing: Only 25 kilometres away you will find the Abetone Alps. Abetone is the biggest ski resort in central Italy. The ski slopes are situated between four marvellous linked valleys: Val di Luce, Valle dello Scoltenna, Valle del Sestalone and Valle di Lima. These valleys form one of the most beautiful, famous and natural scenery of the Appennino. Abetone pooled with the nearby ski resorts of Corno alle Scale and of Cimone for the Big Snow ski-pass. It has moreover strengthened the snowfall using snow cannons.
The protected state forests are rich in firs, larches and pines and offer many walks and treks of varying difficulty: from the simple walks to trips to the mountains. |
Seaside: The Versilian Riviera and its main city called Viareggio are well connected with direct train services to and from Pisa (Centrale), Firenze, Livorno and La Spezia. Viareggio was one of the first seaside resorts in Europe and is still enormously popular today, both with Italians and foreign visitors, particularly those in the yachting community.
The coastal strip of Versilia, from Forte dei Marmi to the north and Torre del Lago Puccini in the south, has over twenty kilometres of beaches with countless private and public beaches, nature parks, pine woods, natural lakes and some splendid countryside.
Interesting Towns
Pietrasanta (25km North West of Lucca): A busy little town, Pietrasanta is historically and artistically the chief town of inland Versilia. Share a coffee with marble sculptors from all over the world and maybe even visit a marble workshop. The town has a pleasant historical centre, and the main piazza is often decorated with exhibitions of modern sculpture. |
Camaiore (18km North West of Lucca): Lying in the foothills of the Apuan alps, Camaiore may not be very attractive on its outskirts, but the long central main street makes for a very pleasant stroll. There are some interesting shops and restaurants and the town has some fine examples of Romanesque churches and architecture.
Torre del Lago Puccini: A short distance south of Viareggio and reachable via impressive Viale dei Tigli, Torre del Lago is a quiet seaside town known chiefly for being the home of Giacomo Puccini who for years owned and lived in a villa here. The Giacomo Puccini Festival is held every year in the summer, in July and August. Enjoy a performance of one of Puccini's Operas in an open air setting, at night, under the stars, and in front of the lake of Torre del Lago.
Carrara: Situated 126km to the north west of Florence at the foot of the Apuan Alps and only a 15 minutes drive away from Viareggio. Carrara is known for it's beautiful white marble and a walk through the town allows you to enjoy many examples of how it has been used. The Duomo is probably the most outstanding building in Carrara, started in the 11th century, it took 300 years to complete and, therefore, contains different styles of architecture. Other notable buildings include the Teatro Politeama, Palazzo dei Malaspina and the Pinacoteca dell'Accademia di Belle Arti. For those who want to see how this marble is extracted a visit to the Colonnata (7km to the east) is worthwhile. |
